With time and patience a cat can be trained to walk on a leash. The type of harness is very important, harnesses that are made for cats are the best. Premier Pet products makes a "come with me kitty" harness that most cats adjust to very well. It clips on the back, has a nice adjustment for the chest and neck so that the cat cannot back out of it and comes with a bungee leash. Start with short sessions in a harness that are accompanied by plenty of praise and treats. Initially only keep the harness on a short time. As the cat gets used to it you can try walking in the house. As things progress he can go outside. Be careful to never allow your cat outside unattended or tethered, they are at risk of attack from other animals.
References :
All I have ever had to do to train a cat is put them in the litter box, then take their front paw and scratch their paw in the litter. They will know what to do from there! It is instinctive!
References :
Cat owner 40 years, CFA breeder.

My cat walks with a harness and a leash. My cat is also super needy and follows me everywhere so it was pretty easy for me. I just walked and he would follow. When I reached a driveway he would walk up it, then reach the end of the leash, then come back and we'd go to the next house. I would start inside and get your cat used to being on the harness. Then walk around with the leash attached and keep calling for him so he walks with you. Treats could help too!
References :
She should know. Place her next to it and you can dig it. And then every two hours you can place her in it. She will use the restroom in there.
References :
did that with two stray cats

This is the method I used for my cat. He has to be walked when the coyotes come into our village.

- harness the cat

- carry him out to the road

- set cat down and begin walking

- observe as the cat lets itself be dragged along on it's side through the gravel

- listen as the cat howls in an attempt to draw the neighbours attention to it's cruel treatment.

- witness the cats frustration as it realizes that no one is going to save it from this humiliation

- observe as the cat gets up on all four feet and begins trailing along as it should have in the first place.

- repeat as necessary

Absolutely loved LEXY's answer.
