What litter for training my kitten?

We’re going to start introducing our 3 week old kitten to a litter tray, and wanted some advice on kitty litter. We currently use the wood-based pellet variety, which our adult cats like, but is this safe for a kitten? I know there are dangers associated with clumping clay litters, so we won’t be using those. What is recommended?

Wood pellets are ideal all round. His mum should still be toileting him just now and for maybe another couple of weeks, unless of course he is an orphan I’m not sure as you do not mention his mum. We tried to show our kittens the tray early and they just wanted to play in it so we kept trays away before independent elimination as did not want to associate it with play especially with those lovely rolly wood pellets! We waited until the day of the first independent elimination, checking daily to see if it had happened and then put the tray(s) in that spot as the kittens felt safe there. They then continued to use the trays with no intervention from humans, mum or one of your other cats may use the tray in this spot as well, this will reinforce to the kitten that this is the toilet, if the tray is not quite where you want it you can gradually move it to another place and as the kitten gets older he will find the other trays and know that they are for toilet. Remember not to flush cat waste in the toilet due to the risks of spreading toxoplasmosis into the environment.
