Unusual litter (re)training problem. Cat owners suggestions or experience please?

I’ve got a new cat that was litter-trained in his old home, before being forced by other cats to live outside, and thereby do his business out there. And now he’s here he refuses to use the tray. Does anyone have any suggestions how to encourage him to use the tray? And what do you think of my idea to put his usual outdoors litter, (soil) in the tray?

Soil works great. I had an adult male kitty that I rescued after a neighbor abandoned him. He was 5-7 years old. My vet suggested the soil, so I tried it. It worked like a charm. And it had good odor control and it didn’t track any worse than regular litter.

I started him off with 100% inexpensive clean potting soil. Then each week as I cleaned and changed his box, I added regular litter. A month later he was using regular litter. He never had any accidents or avoided the litter box.

Sadly, he only lived with me 2 years and 2 months. All those years of being an outdoor kitty and intact male, he was infected with the FIV virus and I lost him to complications of the virus. He was a sweet, gentle soul and he lived the pampered life those last years.

Purrs to you and kitty.
