Training a kitten not to use its claws.?

Is there anyway to train a cat not to use its claws. I had to have my 1 year old declawed and recently I got a kitten.

Cats need to use their front claws on something like a post in order to get the old covers or sheaths off and grow fresh ones. This is normal behavior but unfortunately they can use furniture instead of scratching posts.

You can blunt the tips of her nails with a clipper but you need to keep at this as she will no longer be able to get as good a grip on a post. It is easiest to get a couple of scratching posts or pads and place them around the house in visible, high traffic areas.

Scratching is also to leave scent and visible marks for other cats so a well used post that is in tatters should be left as long as possible.

Here is more information about scratching posts:

In order for her not to scratch you, you want to play only with toys and not with your hands or feet. If he gets overly excited, you can just ignore him until he calms down.
