Can cats get pink eye??

Turns out – yes they can. It is called Conjunctivitis.

Here is a link on that: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1344&articleid=250

I am posting this question as I have been corrected in one of my answers. I did not know that they could – and though my answer was not wrong I would like to elaborate on it for everyones sake.

The question was – "What do I do to treat my cat if he has pink eye?"

Well, to me it sounded more like an eye infection so that is what I posted recommendations for. My recommendations in that are correct – taken straight from my College Grade text on Animal First Aid, which I am trained in.

I also recommended products you would use for humans.
You CAN treat pets with some human medications – though you should check with your vet for dosage requirements, I refer to my text written by Vets – approved by my instructor – and given a good rating by my Vet.

I just thought I would clear that up… Here is my answer to that question for referance….

As far as I know cats cannot have pink eye. It could be an eye infection. You should call your vet, though it doesn’t sound necessary to me.

Get some sterile saline contact lens solution, or eye wash solution and rinse it out daily for two weeks or until cleared up. If there is a discharge wipe the eye area with a warm wash cloth every day.

It sounds to me though like it could be just something stuck in her eye, or a scratch. My mother swears by polysporin – though it is toxic to cats if ingested, neosporin is better – her cat injures her eyes often. She just puts a tiny bit on her cats eye, it works pretty well for her.

Probably nothing to worry about, your vet will likely just tell you how to keep an eye on it.

These are some products that can be used for eye infections in cats, given to me by the member of YA that did not like my response – she is a Vet Assistant.

- Easy Eye: You can purchase this at http://www.petwellbeing.com/cat-conjunctivitis-p30.cfm it comes very highly recommended.

- There are also antibiotics that are for cats to treat such eye infections without prescription such as Terramycin which is an Antibiotic Eye Ointment for Cats that you can buy for $9.99 at: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3261+16804+9675&pcatid=9675 that also treats eye infections including conjunctivitis (also called pink eye).

Hi Lilith… feline conjunctivitis can be caused many different kinds of infectious organisms and there are only three that are common culprits: Feline Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), Feline Chlamydia, and Feline Mycoplasma.

Mycoplasmal infections usually respond well to topical antibiotics, and Chlamydial infections often also respond, but can recur. However, FHV-1 infections do not respond at all to topical antibiotic therapy, and are very frustrating to treat. Sometimes topical antiviral medications are also used and for FHV Lysine may be best to manage the outbreaks.
