It’s said that you can teach your cat tricks, and some people have. But I think you need a cat that’s open to suggestion. We’ve had some cats that are absolutely untrainable. But then we have another that will take treats out of our mouths.
The thing about training cats is that it’s all about positive reinforcement. Treats, treats, and more treats. Never use punishment to train a cat, because the only thing that will do is train it to fear you.
Cats can learn a fair amount of words, so you could train them to repond to vocal cues. There are many books on the subject, but I think the only thing you need to do is use your command, guide the cat to complete the behavior if neccessary, and give it a treat. After a while, give it a treat only every other time. Eventually you only need to give the cat treats every now and then, and it will perform for all your friends.
